HDL cholesterol acts like a scavenger, say experts, because it carries the “bad” LDL cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver. It is called “good” cholesterol, in part because it helps keep some cholesterol from building up in the arteries. “HDL-C” stands for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is considered the “good” cholesterol When LDL-C levels are high in the bloodstream, cholesterol/plaque may build up in the wall of the artery, resulting in a progressive disease called atherosclerosis.Īs a rule, you want to keep your LDL cholesterol low. LDL-C makes up the majority of the body’s cholesterol. Why too much LDL cholesterol is unhealthy? Plaque is a thick, hard fatty deposit that can clog arteries and make them less flexible. It can be applied when there are three cells in the grid, each with only a pair of candidates that share at least one digit among them (e.g. Out of the advanced Sudoku strategies, the forcing chains method is usually a last resort as the chains can be very long and complicated and they do not always produce results. 5 is still the answer to the highlighted cell. The chain would be longer, but the result is the same. Note that when testing for number 1, the player could also have made a chain by going right (to the cell with 1 and 4 as candidates). Therefore, this digit will be the solution for that particular cell. When testing for both digits, the player finds that the outcome for the highlighted cell with candidates 5 and 7 is always 5. In this example, the top highlighted cell with the candidates 1 and 2 was used to apply the forcing chains technique. If so, that will safely be the solution for it. The goal is to find if there is a cell that would bear the same result whichever digit is used. The player picks one and begins testing the changes to puzzle when applying each of the two digits in that cell. ![]() To apply a simple forcing chain, there must be cells with only two candidates in the grid. When it does work, it gives the player the solution for one cell. Unfortunately, applying it requires very high levels of concentration and the outcome can be uncertain. Forcing Chainsįorcing chains is one of the easiest advanced Sudoku strategies to understand. ![]() It can then be safely removed from that cell, leaving only numbers 1 and 2 as candidates to it. When testing them on the grid, the player finds that the 4 highlighted in red would be an impossible candidate in both cases. Thus, there are only two sets of possibilities within this chain for number 4, the green and the yellow sets. In this grid, number 4 is a candidate to two cells in three different rows, allowing the player to use the Swordfish technique.Ĭonnecting them reveals that whenever a digit highlighted in green is possible, the yellows become impossible and vice-versa. The player can then put them to the test and eliminate that number as a candidate to the cells where it would become impossible in both cases. These cells must also be united by column, regardless of the shape they create.Ĭonnecting them will result in a closed chain that reveals two sets of possible placements for that digit. To apply it, the player must find a digit candidate to two cells in the same row, in three different rows. This strategy helps to eliminate a candidate from cells too. It can then be eliminated as a candidate to that cell. Testing the pairs on the grid shows that the 5 highlighted in red would be impossible in both cases. By connecting the cells containing it, it is easy to see that in this situation only the pairs in green or yellow could be possible. In this example, the number 5 forms the necessary pattern to apply the X-Wing strategy. ![]() The next step will be to test those sets on the grid and eliminate the digit from any cell that would become impossible in both situations. By making an X linking diagonally the two opposite extremities of this rectangle, the player finds only two possible sets of positions for that digit. The player can use this strategy when there is one candidate repeated in four cells that form a square or rectangle when mentally connected by row and column. It can also be applied in some intermediate levels, although its incidence is very low in these cases. The X-Wing method is one of the most basic advanced Sudoku strategies. Regardless, their application always demands high levels of concentration from the player as they work by deduction. Advanced Sudoku strategies are used in the hardest levels of these puzzles and they can either help to reduce candidates or to find the solution for a specific cell. ![]() ![]() ![]() Recently there was some confusion on my Tudor History Lovers Facebook page about a photo of the tomb of John and Margaret Beaufort, Duke and Duchess of Somerset, the parents of Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII. He left behind a three-year-old son, Edward, Earl of Warwick, who was barred by his father’s attainder from ever inheriting the throne or any of Clarence’s lands and titles and a five-year-old daughter, Margaret, who would wear a tiny wooden wine butt on a bracelet all her life in commemoration of her father it can be seen in her portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, London.Tomb of Margaret Beauchamp and her second husband John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset (Photo by Memorino from Wikimedia Commons) It was said that, allowed to choose how he would die, he opted to be drowned in a butt of Malmsey (Madeira) wine. “Because the Duchess Cecily had protested against her son being executed in public, Clarence was put to death privately on 18 February 1478 in the Tower of London. In her biography of Elizabeth of York: The First Tudor Queen Alison Weir writes about the execution of Margaret’s father, George, Duke of Clarence. The painting is held by the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 2607) and is titled Unknown woman formerly known as Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury by Unknown artist. I have included in this post a portrait supposedly, but much disputed, of Margaret Pole. She died in about 1459 and when Geoffrey made his will in October 1478 he requested that he be buried at Bisham Priory, Berkshire in the same grave as his first wife. Sadly and inevitably, little is know about Edith St John. ![]() He had the marriage between Margaret and John de la Pole dissolved, paving the way for a union with Margaret and his half brother Edmund Tudor. But in 1453 Henry VI revoked the de la Pole wardship in favour of his two half brothers. William, steward of the royal household, recognised a good marriage prospect when he saw one and married off the six year old Margaret to his seven year old son. And as if that’s not enough Pole family history Margaret Beaufort had been the ward of William de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk following her father’s death. ![]() The Pole family figure prominently during those terrifying Tudor times. With property in both England and Wales, Geoffrey was Constable of Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire, councillor of Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke and brother of Edmund Tudor, Henry VII’s father, and he also served as Marshal of the great and petty sessions at Carmarthen and Cardigan, a position he held for life. Geoffrey was a member of the Welsh supporters that followed Owen Tudor to England. So how was Lady Margaret Pole related to the St John family, I hear you ask? Well, in 1487 Margaret Plantagenet had become the second wife of Sir Richard Pole, who was the son of Geoffrey Pole Esquire and his first wife Edith St. The stand-in executioner, no doubt unnerved by the whole affair, made a terrible botch of the job, landing eleven blows before he eventually managed to sever Lady Margaret’s head from her body. Arranged in haste, the official executioner could not be found and an apprentice was called in to do the job. Lady Margaret continued to protest her innocence and unlawful imprisonment and some reports say she tried to run away. The poor lady’s execution was truly awful. Cromwell issued a Bill of Attainder against Margaret and despite a plea to her son to put a sock in it, she was whisked off to the Tower. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Luckily, plot information and gameplay are interwoven with an elegance that is downright uncommon these days. As it stands, those looking for story will need to seek it out. If the ending of the game, in particular, is hard to understand for some, there is no doubt that is exactly what the developers are after. But by embracing the fusion of fantasy and cyberpunk, the delivery method for story becomes increasingly layered and abstract. There is a good chance that many players will complete the entire campaign with only a rough idea of what has actually taken place - a claim that could also be made in the case of Bastion. Those who played through Bastion will know that Supergiant has a taste for dropping players into the middle act of a larger story, but Transistor is even less forthcoming with plot details. While that story is straightforward enough (and the four leaders of the mysterious society known as The Camerata are emphasized in the game's launch trailer) the actual infusion of story throughout Transistor is unconventional, to say the least. Together, the pair set out to bring to justice those responsible not only for the murder and her loss of voice, but the increased oppression of Cloudbank's most influential figures. For reasons that are initially unclear, Red has been robbed of her voice, and a close friend has been killed by a large sword - dubbed 'The Transistor' - which now possesses the fallen comrade's consciousness. But make no mistake: from a gameplay and story standpoint, Transistor is a truly unique experience from the first moments to its abstract final act.Īlthough the game drops players into the action with little information, the basic premise soon becomes clear: players embody the role of Red, a popular singer in the fictional city of Cloudbank. When the team's follow-up title Transistor was first revealed, it was no surprise to see the studio's emphasis on stunning art and soundscapes was intact. You only get one first impression, and indie studio Supergiant Games made their mark with its initial offering, Bastion - a breathtakingly designed and mechanically sound fusion of old school brawling and modern RPG philosophies. ![]() ![]() ![]() When wondering what can you do with a degree in architecture, it’s helpful to know that architecture is a versatile field, similar to art careers.
